Introduction
Chromis products are 32-bit solutions, designed to take full advantage
of the functions and features offered by Microsoft
Windows and Office.
Chromis products
designed for scalability from a single PC used by one or two individuals
up to a multi-user network for a team of officers. The PC’s in such a
network may participate in Authority’s LAN or within a self-contained
workgroup.
Where the PC’s form part of a corporate LAN a central server is normally used as the
repository for the Chromis central database, and issues such as printing
and backups are dealt with using existing hardware and policies.
On a stand-alone network, one of the PC’s is nominated as the ‘server’ and holds
the database of case details. The other, ‘client’ PC’s require a
permanent network connection to the server. The server PC may also act
as a client, connecting to its own locally stored database.
Software Requirements
Each PC which will act
as a client needs to run Microsoft Access. This can be
the ‘97 version or higher. MS Access forms
part of the MS Office Professional Edition, and is also available as a
separate product. Pre-installation of MS Office Professional is commonly
offered as an upgrade option by PC vendors on purchase of a new PC.
Alternatively, Chromis are able to supply a run-time only version of MS
Access if required.
Hardware Requirements
A typical entry-level desktop PC will be powerful
enough to run Chromis applications comfortably. Each client PC will require 5MB of hard disk space to
store the Chromis application.
The server database will typically require around 10MB to store several thousand records.
On a stand-alone
network, the PC designated as the server should have a backup device.
Typically this would be a tape device thus providing ample capacity to secure the
Chromis data and also facilitating the security of data from your other applications.
A printer will be
required for reports and letters and this will normally be a laser
printer. The printer will need to be connected to one of the PC’s on
the network and shared for the use of all the client PC’s.
